Eight Local Artists Experience New Markets

12 May 2008 by Lauren in News

PITTSBURGH – Three Rivers Arts Festival’s Emerging Artists Program will
give eight local artists their first experience in the market circuit
at the 2008 Duquesne Light Artists Market. The Emerging Artists
scholarship program waives booth and tent rental fees for these gifted
newcomers, and connects them with experienced mentors who help them
navigate the operational details of selling artworks in the market. The
Three Rivers Arts Festival offers the nation’s longest-running Emerging
Artists scholarship program, giving local artists an introduction to
creative entrepreneurship since 2002.

 ”The Emerging Artists
Program helps to launch the market careers of established Pennsylvania
artists,” said Elizabeth Reiss, Three Rivers Arts Festival executive
director. “These artists have proven their viability in the art world;
this program allows them to ‘test drive’ the market environment, which
can provide a substantial source of income, but also requires a
sizeable start-up investment.”

This year’s Emerging Artists
offer work that draws from various media. Kyle Ethan Fischer, a true
eclectic, will offer both paintings and sculptures. Fischer has a
history of exploring every medium from performance art to large-scale
installations. Bruno Scuglia III creates two-dimensional underwater
fish scenes structured within shadowboxes. Aimee Manion is a triple
threat at this year’s Artists Market, offering painting, purses and
crocheted jewelry.

Other Emerging Artists concentrate on one
particular medium. Olga Mihalyova channels her love for mathematics
into creating jewelry that echoes geometric shapes and patterns.
Jewelry-designer, Leslie Foxson will sell glass pendants reminiscent of
abstract art.

The 2008 Emerging Artists cite artistic purposes
as diverse as their media. Husband-and-wife team, Paul Roden and
Valerie Lueth of Tugboat Printshop see printmaking as the most
democratic medium. Gail Beem’s landscape paintings are an expression of
her spiritual connection to the natural world surrounding her, while
photographer Maura Strazza strives to share the beauty and uniqueness
of Pittsburgh, her hometown.
