New Exhibition Investigates Culture Through the Lenses of Outsiders
Dilated Dialogs: A Photographic Perspective opens at the Three Rivers Arts Festival Gallery on Friday, April 25, 2008, from 6 - 10 p.m. Curated by Artist Upstairs' Tavia LaFollette, Dilated Dialogs is a photographic conversation between Americans traveling abroad and foreign-born artists working and living in the United States. The show will be open to the public April 28 - May 24, 2008, at the Three Rivers Arts Festival Gallery at 937 Liberty Avenue in downtown Pittsburgh.
"This show examines the differences between what Americans see and photograph when they travel abroad and what non-Americans notice when they travel to the United States," said Curator Tavia LaFollette. "The photographic exchange we've developed explores ideas of globalization, identity, religion, and cultural context."
Guest artist Oscar Palacio, a native of Colombia, investigates the United States through the monuments and other architectural elements constructed by the state. A teacher at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design (Boston), Palacio's work has been exhibited at numerous galleries and museums along the East Coast. In addition to Palacio, contributing artists include Karin Bergdolt, Don Gogniat, Carolina Loyola-Garcia, Sunyoung Kim, Jung Yoon Lee, Ricardo Muniz, Stephanie Mayer-Stayley, Andres Tapia-Urzua and Chris Taylor.
