Homegrown Hip-Hop Hits the Three Rivers Arts Festival
Pittsburgh's own Formula412 brings real hip-hop to the Three Rivers Arts Festival Main Stage at 7:30 pm, Monday, June 16, 2008. All Three Rivers Arts Festival Main Stage performances are free and open to the public.
With Pittsburgh artists like Wiz Khalifa gaining national notoriety, Pittsburgh's hip-hop scene is growing more successful. Led by emcee Masai Turner, an elder statesman of Pittsburgh's ever-expanding hip-hop scene, Formula412 strives to foster community through music and keep hip-hop grounded. Doing away with the materialism and arrogance sometimes associated with the genre, Formula412 gets back to the roots of hip-hop.
With sound and lyrics that hearken back to classic hip-hop groups like Run-DMC and Eric B. & Rakim, Formula412 is simultaneously fresh and vintage, pushing the limits of the genre with live instrumentation in the style of seminal hip-hop act The Roots. The group includes a live DJ with musicians on guitar, bass, keyboard and drums.
"The Three Rivers Arts Festival has a tradition of presenting live music," said Festival Executive Director Elizabeth Reiss. "Formula412's fusion of classic hip-hop style with real musicianship means that we add hip-hop to the mix of genres you'll see this year."
