The Holmes Brothers' Gospel Sound Resonates in Pittsburgh
The gospel-inspired trio The Holmes Brothers returns to Pittsburgh for a Three Rivers Arts Festival Main Stage performance at 7:30 pm on Thursday, June 19, 2008. All Three Rivers Arts Festival Main Stage performances are free and open to the public.
Gently framing a clutch of originals and well-chosen covers within their signature blend of old-time gospel singing and roadhouse blues, the Holmes Brothers repertoire deftly negotiates the boundary between the secular and the sacred. Bassist Sherman Holmes, guitarist/pianist Wendell Holmes and drummer Popsy Dixon each contribute their voices to create spine-tingling harmonies that are the trio's trademark.
"Whether you relate to a religious message or not, the Holmes Brothers' music stirs the soul," says Festival Executive Director Elizabeth Reiss. "The Holmes Brothers will inspire you to believe in the power of good music."
The Holmes Brothers were featured on Outlaws and Angels, the nationally televised tribute to Willie Nelson, and have appeared on Late Night with Conan O'Brien, the World Café, Mountain Stage and NPR's All Things Considered. They last appeared at the Three Rivers Arts Festival is 2005.
