James McMurtry Brings Rootsy Rock to Pittsburgh
Known for his keen observations about everyday life and searing political statements, singer-songwriter James McMurtry and his band bring their country-rock sound to the 49th annual Three Rivers Arts Festival, 7:30 pm, Saturday, June 7, 2008, on the Festival Main Stage. Special guest Scott Blasey opens the show at 6:30 pm. All Three Rivers Arts Festival Main Stage performances are free and open to the public.
The son of novelist Larry McMurtry, James McMurtry has taken his father's gift with words and set it to rock and roll. McMurtry's recent work has made it a point to take a hard look at America through descriptive, honest lyrics and wailing guitar. His newest album, Just Us Kids, remains firmly rooted in the rock and roll tradition of artists like Neil Young while exhibiting a political edge.
"McMurty's music evokes the times in a way that conjures up Bob Dylan's work in the 1960s," said Elizabeth Reiss, executive director of the Three Rivers Arts Festival. "He's a masterful singer-songwriter who isn't afraid to take political stands that might not always be popular."
Opening for McMurtry at the Festival will be Scott Blasey of Pittsburgh's favorite sons, The Clarks. In 2007, Blasey released his third solo album entitled Travelin' On.
