Rising Star Lizz Wright Brings Intimate Jazz to the 'Burgh

|
The powerful vocals of young jazz songstress Lizz Wright meet with the pop-soul hooks of special guest Raul Midón at the 49th annual Three Rivers Arts Festival. Wright performs at 7:30 pm, Sunday, June 8, 2008, on the Festival Main Stage. Midón opens at 6:30 pm. All Three Rivers Arts Festival Main Stage performances are free and open to the public.

Verve recording artist Lizz Wright has been performing since childhood. Growing up as the daughter of a minister and gospel singer, Wright began playing and singing in church, then expanded her repertoire to include choral music in high school. Her 2003 debut Salt reached the number two slot on Billboard's contemporary jazz chart, striking a chord with both critics and the public. Her most recent release, The Orchard, features an eclectic supporting cast of songwriters, instrumentalists and guest vocalists in intimate performances inspired by Wright's small-town childhood.

"Lizz Wright compares to legendary singers like Nina Simone and Billie Holliday," said Festival Executive Director Elizabeth Reiss. "With her gospel-trained contralto and effortless performance quality, she'll provide an excellent soundtrack for a lazy Sunday evening at the Festival."

Special guest Raul Midón was an in-demand back-up singer on the Latin circuit, performing for artists like Julio Iglesias and Shakira. An outspoken original emerging as a new pop talent, Midón mixes old-time soul with sexy Latin and jazz influences.
