Maceo Parker to Give Pittsburgh a Funk Lesson
Jam sax master Maceo Parker will energize Pittsburgh with his soulful funk orchestra at 7:30 pm, Friday, June 13, 2008, on the Three Rivers Arts Festival Main Stage. All Three Rivers Arts Festival Main Stage performances are free and open to the public.
While most sax players have followed in the footsteps of jazz legends like Charlie Parker and John Coltrane, Maceo Parker has consistently marched to a different tune. "P-funk Parker" got his professional start playing alongside James Brown in the sixties. He went on to play as a featured musician in George Clinton's Parliament-Funkadelic and Bootsy Collins' Rubber Band. With multiple albums under his belt, Maceo describes his own music as "2% jazz, 98% funky stuff."
"Artists like Maceo Parker show us how a strong musical voice can travel through time," says Festival Executive Director Elizabeth Reiss. "Maceo is a living funk legend, and we're glad he's coming back to the Three Rivers Arts Festival."
