Punk Pioneers Will Rock the Three Rivers Arts Festival

|
The idiosyncratic punk rock sounds of the New York Dolls will thrill concert-goers at Three Rivers Arts Festival at 7:30 pm, Sunday, June 15, 2008, on the Main Stage. All Three Rivers Arts Festival Main Stage performances are free and open to the public.

Formed in 1971 in New York City, the New York Dolls left an indelible mark on the music world, combining raucous punk rock sounds with glam rock looks. A precursor to bands like the Sex Pistols and the Stooges, the New York Dolls came storming onto the scene with sloppy, hard-edged guitar work accompanied by front man David Johansen's kitsch-embracing lyrics and energetic delivery. The group quickly gained a cult-like following, but the Dolls only released two studio albums during the seventies.

Despite tragedy and time, the two surviving members of the band - guitarist Sylvain Sylvain and Johannsen - regrouped with three new musicians in 2004 to release the New York Dolls' long-awaited third album in 2006, One Day It Will Please Us to Remember Even This. Featuring guest artists like Michael Stipe and Iggy Pop, the album captured a more mature incarnation of the band while maintaining their original sound.

Elizabeth Reiss, Festival Executive Director, said about the New York Dolls: "For anyone who was rocking in the 70s and 80s - and there are a lot of us in Pittsburgh! - the New York Dolls are iconic. They're the very beginning of American punk glamour."
