Contained Offers Unique Space for Creativity

PITTSBURGH - Discarded shipping containers and art? The connection isn't obvious, but this year's Three Rivers Arts Festival will be making things clear with Contained, dynamic art installations inside used shipping containers. Contained runs from 12-8 pm, June 6-22, 2008, along Forbes Avenue between Market Square and Stanwix Street.

"Pittsburgh's downtown is seeing a lot of new developments, which is great for our city but has limited our choices of exhibition venues," says Elizabeth Reiss, Executive Director of the Festival. "The shipping containers are accessible, adaptable, waterproof and customizable to suit the needs of individual artists."

Utilizing ten discarded shipping containers, each one measuring 8'x40'x8', Contained provides a unique art experience from some of Pittsburgh's most creative artists. The installations featured in Contained are not limited by any medium or subject matter. Concepts were selected through a jurying process that involved both Festival and Associated Artists of Pittsburgh representatives. Selected projects touch on a wide variety of subjects and incorporate a number of different mediums, from sound collage to photography.

Contained installations include:
